The Digital Portfolio Framework: The reality

Each of the dimensions in the digital portfolio framework has unique purpose and potential. The progressive elements of the four different types of digital portfolios create distinct models that can be selected to achieve desired outcome. The following classroom examples were drawn from teacher interviews.

Digital Archive Portfolios

·         Digitally recording reading records to store students’ progressive ability over the course of the year.

·         This could be used to provide evidence of their learning and development over a period of time.

·         The archiving of student work samples creates an evidence base that teachers can use during the process of reporting to the Student, to the School and to Government bodies.

 

Digital Capability Portfolios

·         Students could use digital capabilities portfolios to record presentations and assignment tasks that compile work samples, which demonstrate their understanding on a topic, to create an assessable product.

·         This creates a portfolio that documents student progression through their learning journey in a format that can be used for summative or formative assessment.

  ·         Students select a variety of work samples that demonstrate their achievement and celebrate their learning over the course of a unit, term or year.

·         They are designed for reporting to a targeted audience, such as parents and teachers.

·         This form of digital portfolio can be used to ensure student success and engage the learners by allowing them to create a document that not only focuses on their academic success, but also on their personal development through their strengths and achievements throughout the year.

·         Can be used to create a student centred, self managed inquiry project where  a student's research, worksamples and reflections on the content are used to create a digital portfolio that is the learning journey.

·          Students could record the progress of a digitally based research task on a topic of their selection and constantly reflect on their learning’s.

·         The product created can become an assessment piece but the focus is on the journey and reflection process.
